O universo de Cow and Chicken é bastante bizarro, uma vaca é irmã de um frango e os dois são filhos de humanos, dos quais apenas a parte inferior é mostrada. Além disso, Bum de Fora, um sujeito nu vermelho que se assemelha ao demônio, completa o cenário da série, que conta com outros personagens igualmente bizarros. A série usa de vários clichés de desenhos. Por exemplo, Vaca possui um alter-ego SuperVaca, uma superheroína cujas características são diferentes das de sua personalidade normal (como poder voar e falar espanhol). O vilão Bum de Fora tenta descobrir sua verdadeira identidade para derrotá-la, o que possibilitaria que ele obtivesse sucesso em sua tentativa de corromper o Frango. Os pais dos dois, chamados Pai e Mãe, possuem apenas a parte de baixo do corpo e, em alguns episódios, a câmera mostra que não há nada acima de suas cinturas. Além disso, nas sombras dos dois é possível ver que eles possuem apenas a parte de baixo ,mas no episódio "Cow and Chicken Reclining", o Pai fica preso numa espécie de cadeira, e o Frango retira várias coisas do armário, como um desentupidor, um porco e as supostas partes de cima dos pais da Vaca e do Frango.
